This course will look at the concept of social impact investments and its place in sustainable development, especially in developing countries. We will then look at trends in social impact investments particularly focusing on spatial and sectoral disaggregation of impact investment funds. From this we will concentrate on examining development outcome indicators in SSA as well as the funding requirement to bridge this gap and use that as a basis to make a case for social impact investment in SSA. The next aspect will then look at examining the social development ecosystem in SSA and particularly identifying challenges in specific sectors that can constitute opportunities for attracting social impact funds or investments. The final aspect of the course will then look at how to negotiate the politics of development in SSA and how that may affect doing business in many of these social development sectors.
