PhD Visiting Student Program

The GNAM PhD Visiting Student Program provides doctoral students with the opportunity to gain international research experience and expand their academic networks by participating in a visiting research program at another GNAM school.

GNAM PhD Visiting Student Program Information

Protocol for PhD visiting student

A doctoral student at the Home Institution should follow requirements set by the Doctoral Program office at the Home Institution to identify the viability of a PhD visiting student placement.

•    The student makes a request to participate in the GNAM PhD Visiting Student Program at the Home Institution.

•    Once approved, the student works with the Home Institution Advisor and the PhD office at the Home Institution to facilitate a visit opportunity with a Host Institution. Opportunities can be sourced from information provided by GNAM (e.g., posted participating GNAM partners, posted visit opportunities) and/or direct connections between GNAM partners.

•    To formalize a visit, a Host Institution and a Host Institution Advisor must confirm to support a visit.

•    The Host Institution will facilitate the relevant documents for the student to apply for a visa (if this is required), and/or in completing the document requirements at the Home Institution. Fees for required documentation would be the responsibility of the Home Institution.

•    The Host Institution will confirm the start and end dates of the visit by the doctoral student to the Home Institution.

•    The Host Institution would also inform the dates on which the student may arrive, the duration of the visit, whether taking courses is feasible, and about any other regulations for visiting doctoral students.

•    No formal deadline for participation would be defined. Visits would be identified on a rolling basis. Typically, students would participate in one visit only, but an option for additional visits (at the same or different schools) would be possible.

Norms of Involvement

•    The visiting doctoral student may visit the Host Institution for a period ranging between 6-weeks (minimum) to 12-months (maximum), based on the agreed duration between the Host and Home Institutions.

•    The doctoral student or Home Institution must bear all costs of travel, lodging and food expenses, travel insurance, and any other miscellaneous visit expenses.

•    The Host Institution will provide a workspace and access to research resources (e.g., library, computing, software, databases) to the doctoral student, along with other residency requirements (such as identity cards).

Optional

•    Visiting students would not automatically have access to courses offered by the Host Institution. However, there is a recognition that the ability to audit or participate in a Host Institution’s PhD coursework would be a significant benefit to visiting students. Thus, when possible, visiting students would be permitted to audit PhD level courses offered by the Host Institution.

•    Upon completion of the visit, the Host Institution may provide a certificate or letter stating the satisfactory completion of the visit.

•    The student could be required to submit a report summarizing work accomplished to both advisors at both institutions.

•    The student could be asked to present a seminar at both the Host and Home Institution at the end of the visit.
