China's Macro Economy in the New Era

In the past 40 more years, China has experienced rapid economic development, but in recent years, China’s economic growth has slowed down, and some new problems have appeared together with the changing global economic environment.
This course is designed to let students understand the general macroeconomic environment in China and its implications for business. Based on some macroeconomic principles, issues such as economic growth, economic fluctuations, external balances, financial development, and development strategies, etc. are going to be discussed. But the central theme is the changing pattern of economic development in China. We know that China’s old development pattern is not sustainable, so an environment-friendly and innovation-driven development pattern is expected.
The course is composed of six sessions. The first four sessions give a general description of China’s macroeconomic performances with basic economic tools. The first session discusses China’s rapid economic growth in the past 40 years and the factors for this growth. The second session deals with short-term macroeconomic fluctuations in China. The third session discusses the financial system in China, and the fourth session looks into the problem of China’s external imbalance. The last two sessions focus on China’s development pattern and strategies. The fifth session is about China’s environmental problems and green development, and the sixth session turns to the issue of further reform and opening for an innovation-driven development.
